We are in catch-up mode at my house, nothing unusual this time of year, but even more so than ever, this year.   Our connections to the academic world’s calendar, even with the heads of household being retired, are only part of the issue.   The readings from the First Sunday of Advent help me remember that necessary choices should not make us put our spiritual life on hold or, worse yet, make us oblivious to the importance of the Divine altogether.

The first reading from the Book of Isaiah envisions a world we still seek today. Imagining a world without war seems almost impossible with the many that are so literally visible throughout the global world or a bit less so in our family and community struggles.   What can we do now so we “can live the way we were made” and “walk in the light of the Lord”?

In the Letter to the Romans, the busyness of life as well as its pitfalls are well acknowledged, then and now.   Withdrawal from life seems like a good option at times, (ah sleep!), and that does help to refresh us… partially, sometimes.   What can and will we do to move forward, not only to get rid of obstacles, but to replace them with positive actions?

Then there is the reading from the Gospel according to Luke which tells us that we just don’t know the timing of the world’s events or when the Lord will come again to signal the end of our time. That realization can be frightening or awakening… or both!     Do we curl up in a ball in oblivion or just live who knows how... or in what way?

The direction we are given throughout Scripture is to “be vigilant”.   I understand this to mean that we need to be vigilant to how we are living personally and to change our negative patterns to those in step with the Divine Plan.   Yes, Jesus is coming but is alive here and right now.   Recognizing Jesus in our world, even in ourselves, will help promote the goodness in the world and better living for all, for however long each of us has in this world… so that our life in the next will be one of peace and harmony.    That sounds pretty good to me… awake O sleeper!

Blessings,
