FAITH BOOK

23rd SUNDAY -C- September 8, 2019

Wisdom 9: 13-18; Psalm 90; Philemon 9-10, 12-17; Luke 14: 25-33

By Jude Siciliano, OP

Mini reflections on the Sunday scripture readings designed for persons on the run. "Faith Book" is also brief enough to be posted in the Sunday parish bulletins people take home.

From today’s Gospel reading:

Jesus said to the crowds,

"Anyone of you who does not renounce

all their possessions cannot be my disciple."

Reflection:

Pain and sacrifice are inevitably attached to committed discipleship. There is no such thing as casual Christianity. Are we willing to pay the costs? Do we have the resolve to keep the promise of discipleship even when it requires serious and ongoing sacrifice? Those are some of the questions raised by today’s gospel passage.

So, we ask ourselves:

  • How am I compromising in my response to Jesus today?

  • What does following Jesus now ask of me?
