Pilgrimage to the Lands of Dominic - 1985
By: Barbara Cooper

After Mass at St Marie Novella we are on our way to Rome. When we arrive at Villa Rosa where we will be staying, the Sisters are at the doorway to greet us. It is a welcoming feeling, and something of a relief to be speaking english with these Irish Dominicans after stumbling along in Spanish, French and Italian accompanied by smiles and gestures.

The traffic in Rome makes NYC seem like a picnic! Six roads merge into one gate. In our orientation to the city, Margaret advises us:

- Let everything - smells, tastes, etc., - embrace you. Let everything be a friend. Be patient.

We'll touch:
Ancient Rome - the Forum and Coliseum
Rome of Early Church - churches, catacombs
Cultural Rome - museums, gardens
Artists' Rome - street artists, fountains
Ecclesiastical Rome.......

Distinct flavor, culture of Lombard
- hot, slow, don't get pressured
- avoid rush hours
- there are two kinds of pedestrians in Rome: The Quick and The Dead!
- Rule of Italian drivers is "drive aggressively" and fill in every space.

Our Villa Rosa is just down the street from the Coliseum; I'm practicing being a "Quick" pedestrian!
